Exhibitions at the Scottish Football Museum

Alongside the permanent exhibits the Scottish Football Museum runs an exciting programme of special exhibitions. These themed exhibitions are inspired by the museum's collections but often include objects from all over Scotland and beyond, offering unique chances to see some incredible items. The exhibitions are designed to draw attention to specific subjects, events, people or places; such as the Scottish Cup and Women's Football, and help tell Scotland's Footballing story.

WORLD OF FOOTBALL

From a crowd of just 4,000 spectators which watched the first official international football match in 1872, to an audience of 715 million which tuned in to watch the 2006 World Cup Final in Germany, football has developed into a Global game.

Scotland and England, who contested the first international match, can jointly claim to be the oldest international football teams in the world but today they are joined by teams from 206 other National Associations.

The game is everywhere, in every country, on every continent, and is played and watched by men, women, boys and girls on a scale which cannot be matched by any other team sport in the world.

This exhibition celebrates the spectacular growth of football around the globe and explores Scotland’s place within the world’s greatest game.

THE CHARLIE McBAIN COLLECTION

We recently ran a fun competition around our "Memory Lane" display, where we challenged our visitors to name as many players from the past as they could from our display wall. All the photos come from the "Charlie McBain collection" which was recently donated.

Our winner was Mr Stephen Falconer from Pollok in Glasgow (Pictured Below) with a very impressive 63 correctly identified players.

We still have the pictures in place, so if anyone wants to try and beat 63 just for fun, come along and give it a go.

All the photographs in this section were taken by Charlie McBain Born 1st January 1931in Blantyre, Charlie initially trained as a reporter at Hamilton Advertiser where he first teamed up with his lifelong friend – the world renowned photographer Harry Benson.

After National Service he switched from reporting to photography and for 45 years worked as a photographer for many different newspapers and was Sports Photographer of the Year in 1976.

His career covered all aspects of Scottish life but primarily his main interests were in sport and his love of football. Now retired and living in Motherwell, he still enjoys his many interests and his two grandchildren Fraser and Louise.

18th May 1960

1960

Fifty years ago, Real Madrid defeated Eintracht Frankfurt  by seven goals to three in a match  many people still regard as the greatest club match ever played.

Right here at Hampden Park 127,621 fans (The all time attendance record for a European Cup Final) were treated to a truly memorable feast of football.

The crowd were enthralled by the skill and artistry of the mighty Real Madrid, so much so that, loud gasps of disbelief were heard from the crowd throughout the game as the players from both sides
showed off their impressive talents.

Frank Boyle - Cartoonist

Frank Boyle is the award-winning political cartoonist of the Edinburgh Evening News. Since 1999 his work has covered events at Holyrood, Westminister and beyond.

He was voted Cartoonist of the Year at the Scottish Press Awards in 2003 and 2006. In 2008 a major retrospective of his work was held at the City Art Centre in Edinburgh.

During this time he has also produced many football cartoons, mainly following the fluctuating fortunes of Hearts and Hibs but also of the Scotland team and other clubs. It is these cartoons which form the basis of this exhibition.

As a schoolboy in 1970 Frank produced a Stirling Albion fanzine, the Albion View, which is now on display in the Scottish Football Museum.

The cartoons on display are prints. If you would like to buy any of the original drawings please contact Frank at info@boylecartoon.co.uk
