Alan Rough

1959 —

Clubs: Partick Thistle, Hibernian, Orlando Lions, Celtic, Hamilton Academical, Ayr United

Alan started his career at Firhill in 1969 and was a member of the Partick Thistle team which created a major shock in 1971, defeating a much fancied Celtic side by four goals to one to lift the Scottish League Cup. He would also win a First Division Championship medal in 1976. Between 1976 and 1982 ‘Roughie’ was a mainstay of the Scotland international team, amassing all but two of his 53 caps and playing at two World Cup tournaments.

Alan remained at Thistle until 1982, over which time he played in 410 League games, before moving on to Hibernian. With the Easter Road side he was a Scottish League Cup Finalist in 1985 and would win the remainder of his Scotland caps. Roughie also had short spells with Orlando Lions, Celtic, Hamilton Academical and Ayr United but he is best remembered at International level where he played at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina and the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Alan was also Scotland’s number one in famous victories against the ‘Auld Enemy’ in 1976, 1977 and 1981.
