Renton FC, Champions of the World

Following a 6-1 victory in the 1888 Scottish Cup Final, Renton FC contested a challenge match with the FA Cup winners, West Brom.

As neither nation had an established league competition, the press dubbed this a match for “the championship of the United Kingdom and the world”. At Second Hampden, in terrible weather, Renton won the match 4-1. A trophy was commissioned by the club to commemorate the achievement and now resides in the first gallery of the Scottish Football Museum.
